GalleyMaster XD Examples

Here are some examples of what can be done with GalleyMaster XD. These examples were done using the Macintosh version of GalleyMaster XD, Adobe PageMaker 6.52 and Adobe Acrobat Distiller. You will need the Adobe Acrobat plug-in to view the samples online, or you can right-click the links (Windows) or click-hold the links (Mac) to download the PDF's to disk and view them with the Acrobat Reader. The Real Estate Guide is HTML so you do not need plugins or Acrobat to view that.

Real Estate Guide (HTML)

This is a good example of what can be done using the inline graphic import feature of GalleyMaster XD. The database this came from had six fields. The field names were graphic, price, address, descript, mlsnum, and contact. After the record styles were set up it took about 20 seconds to format the page. When the document was finished, it was exported to HTML using PageMaker 6.5's HTML export feature.

Laser Disk Catalog (PDF, 17Kb)

This is an example of the kind of typological precision you can get with GalleyMaster XD and Adobe PageMaker. This is an 18 column catalog of laser discs making heavy use of tabs. There are left aligned tabs, decimal tabs and centered tabs. There were 18 fields used from the database to make this document. A template was first set up with all of the vertical lines and column labels. Rule below paragraphs specifications were used to make the horizontal lines of the grid. This file is in PDF format.

Classified Advertising (PDF, 33Kb)

This example shows some of the powerful field suppression features of GalleyMaster XD. It also uses widow and orphan control settings to keep listings together. The database this was made from had four fields. The fields were head, subhead, body and phone. The head field contained the classification, and this field was set to be suppressed when it repeated. The subhead field contained the item offered for sale/rent, and was made to be bold. It also had a rule above applied to it so as to separate the listings. The body field which contained the description of the item being offered was set to plain text, and the phone field was set to bold in the field styles. Instead of separating the fields with tabs or returns as in the previous examples, the last three fields were each separated by two spaces. Also, GalleyMaster XD replaced all of the computer hyphens in the phone number field with non-breaking hyphens so the phone number would not break.

Phone Book (PDF, 148Kb)

This demonstrates the use of a field from the database to determine the record style. The database this was made from has seven fields; HEADING, NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE, ADTYPE, GRAPHIC, and LNORDER .These fields were exported from the database in tab delimited format. The HEADING field contained the classification name, and this field was set to be suppressed when it repeated. It also had a rule applied above and below it so as to separate it from the listings. The NAME field held the name of the company in the phone book, the ADDRESS held the address and the PHONE field contained the phone number. The ADTYPE field contained the the name of the type of listing or ad type that is contained in the record. This allows to have different ad types in the same database and have different type and paragraph specs appplied to them. The graphic field contained the name of the inline graphic for the in-column space advertising. The LNORDER field contains the order of the lines to aid in sorting the listings. Using the methods demonstrated in this example you could make a very complex telephone directory.
